Honduras investigation into 1997 Maduro kidnapping

Overview

Honduran authorities arrested 72-year-old Marco Antonio Ávila Castellanos, a former member of the ‘Los Bustillo’ criminal organization, in connection with the 1997 kidnapping and murder of Ricardo Ernesto Maduro Andreu. The victim was the son of former President Ricardo Maduro Joest.

Investigators identified Ávila Castellanos as having provided logistical support, such as securing vehicles and houses for victims. Following his arrest, a judge ordered his remand to the El Progreso Penal Center in Yoro. While the defense argued that the statute of limitations had expired, the judge rejected the request, citing the suspect’s status as a flight risk and a lack of willingness to submit to justice.
