Hong Kong launch of China government bond futures
Overview
On 3 August 2026, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd (HKEX) launched 5-year China government bond (CGB) futures. These cash-settled contracts, representing 500,000 yuan each, were designed to allow offshore investors to hedge RMB interest-rate risk. The launch was supported by a cooperation framework between the China Securities Regulatory Commission and Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission, with major institutions including HSBC, Bank of China (Hong Kong), and Standard Chartered serving as initial liquidity providers.
By mid-August, China's 10-year government bond yields had dropped to 1.67%, the lowest level since mid-2025, amid expectations of economic stimulus following weak industrial and retail data. To bolster the financial system, the People's Bank of China conducted an overnight reverse repo operation injecting approximately 349 billion yuan. The introduction of the HKEX futures contracts coincided with this period of market volatility, aiming to strengthen Hong Kong’s role as a hub for yuan-denominated risk management.
