Former Brazilian President José Sarney, 96, was discharged from UDI Hospital in São Luís, Maranhão, on Saturday morning, October 17, following a nine-day hospitalization. Sarney was admitted on October 9 after experiencing significant abdominal pain and underwent emergency surgery to treat an intestinal obstruction. The procedure was reported to have proceeded without complications. During his recovery, he was monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU) before being moved to a regular hospital room as he showed “satisfactory” clinical evolution. Sarney notably served as the first civilian president during Brazil's redemocratization period from 1985 to 1990. On October 20, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited Sarney in São Luís during a campaign trip to the state, meeting with him as he continues to recover from his recent medical procedures.
