Electronic devices like smartphones and keyboards also accumulate sweat and microorganisms, necessitating regular disinfection. Often-overlooked items like metal keys can be cleaned with white vinegar and hot water. Recent guidance emphasizes the importance of maintaining cleaning tools to avoid spreading contaminants. Mops should be washed weekly with hot water and detergent, rinsed, and dried completely, with replacement recommended every three to six months. While diluted chlorine can reduce bacteria on kitchen sponges, the USDA notes that their porous structure makes them difficult to sanitize completely, recommending frequent replacement. The CDC warns that users must strictly avoid mixing bleach with vinegar, acids, or ammonia to prevent dangerous chemical reactions. Newer findings highlight that sponges are significant sources of pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, and Listeria. Biomedical expert Roberto Martins Figueiredo indicates that synthetic polyurethane sponges can accumulate resistant bacterial colonies after only seven days of use, suggesting weekly replacement is necessary. Experts note that bacteria can form a protective biofilm within sponge fibers, shielding them from standard detergents. To combat this, food safety experts recommend disinfection using high temperatures, such as microwave sterilization, as simple rinsing is often insufficient.
