The two-year-old colt Hughes, trained by Bob Baffert, maintained an undefeated record through several high-profile victories. Following a six-length win in the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita Park, which secured a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the horse went on to win the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland. Guided by jockey Flavien Prat in the latter race, Hughes secured a 2 1/4-length victory. In this fifth career start, the colt overcame pressure from a field of eight to finish ahead of American History, trained by Todd Pletcher, who finished second by a head. Salahudin, also trained by Baffert, took third. These consecutive wins have established the colt as an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby.
