Human rights concerns in Azerbaijan

Overview

Human rights organizations have raised alarms regarding the treatment of political detainees in Azerbaijan. Human Rights Watch warned that opposition leader Ali Karimli, head of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, faces conditions in pre-trial detention comparable to those of Russian figure Alexei Nawalny. Karimli has been held since late 2025 on coup attempt accusations, with supporters reporting psychological abuse and poor confinement conditions.

Amnesty International subsequently reported a deterioration in the health of political prisoners, specifically noting that Karimli has been deprived of clean drinking water and proper ventilation, conditions described as “potentially equivalent to torture.” The organization also highlighted the plight of media expert Alesker Mamedli, who requires medical care, and activist Bahruz Hasanli, who faces potential extradition from Ukraine to Azerbaijan.
