In late July 2026, the human rights organization Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) denounced actions by Bangladeshi authorities, describing them as politically motivated attacks on fundamental freedoms. Initial reports highlighted the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) filing charges against several journalists and a blogger, alongside the suspension and removal of teachers at Dhaka University due to alleged political dissent. By late August, the situation escalated as the ICT ordered journalists Shyamal Dutta, Mozammel Babu, and Farzana Rupa to appear before the tribunal regarding charges of crimes against humanity. These charges reportedly stem from journalistic activities and statements related to the July 2024 protests. JMBF characterized the application of “crimes against humanity” labels to journalistic speech as “deeply alarming,” warning that such prosecutions could lead to self-censorship and undermine press freedom. On August 24, a special tribunal ordered the three journalists to remain in custody. Prosecutors allege they incited the suppression of protesters by asking provocative questions during a July 2024 press conference. The Commonwealth Journalists Association and other human rights groups have condemned the decision, arguing that questioning political leaders is a fundamental journalistic duty. Meanwhile, families of the detained have raised concerns regarding the legality of their detention and the denial of bail.
