Human trafficking and illegal recruitment in the Philippines
Overview
Philippine authorities have intercepted multiple instances of suspected illegal recruitment and human trafficking involving various destinations and job offers.
In one operation, the National Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Migrant Workers rescued 23 women from an unregistered facility. These women were allegedly promised domestic work in Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, immigration officers at Mactan-Cebu International Airport intercepted a man attempting to travel to Russia under the guise of a tourist; he had been recruited via WhatsApp for a K9 handler position.
Following these incidents, the Bureau of Immigration intercepted three men at Davao International Airport who were allegedly recruited to serve as soldiers or border guards in Eastern Europe. The individuals had claimed they were traveling to Thailand for Muay Thai tournaments, but later admitted their true destination was Eastern Europe, where they were promised monthly salaries of P200,000. These recruits were reportedly contacted via Facebook and Telegram. All intercepted individuals were turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for investigation.
