The city of Oleshky in the Russian-occupied Kherson region of Ukraine continues to face a severe humanitarian catastrophe. Residents endure extreme shortages of food, clean water, electricity, and medicine. Previous reports indicated that some civilians have been forced to consume grass and dogs to survive due to blocked supplies. European Commissioner Hadjah Lahbib has described the situation as ‘horrific.’ Ukrainian officials, including Kherson Governor Oleksandr Procudyn, report that approximately 2,000 people, including 50 children, are currently trapped in the city without basic necessities. Procudyn has accused Russian forces of preventing residents from escaping, while Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated that Russia has rejected Ukrainian proposals to facilitate civilian evacuations. The crisis is exacerbated by the 2023 destruction of the Kakhovka dam and ongoing physical dangers from landmines and drones. Russian forces have reportedly mined access roads and used drones to target individuals attempting to enter or leave the area. While the Ukrainian military attempts to deliver aid via drones, these efforts face interception or confiscation. The Kremlin has acknowledged the supply shortages but maintains that the Russian military is working to resolve the issues. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has confirmed that residents have faced severe shortages of essential goods for months.
