The Hungarian government has initiated a restructuring of the HUN-REN Research Network, aiming to integrate the organization more closely with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) through legislative amendments. This process includes granting the government authority to appoint representatives to the network’s Board of Directors. The restructuring has been marked by leadership tensions. State Secretary Péter Horváth indicated that the ministry does not see “guaranteed cooperation” under the current president and CEO, proposing András Stipsicz for a transitional role. While HUN-REN denied claims of a communication breakdown with research institutions, the leadership transition appears imminent. Minister of Science and Technology Zoltán Tanács stated that the current leadership is was expected to resign, resign following government requests for them to step down. On October 11, 2026, the HUN-REN Governing Body announced that President Prof. Dr. Balázs Gulyás and CEO Roland Jakab will step down during by mutual agreement, effective October 21, 2026. Dr. András Stipsicz, currently the summer. A draft law governing director of the network Rényi Alfréd Mathematics Research Institute, has been elected as the new president of HUN-REN, effective October 22. Stipsicz will serve in this capacity until the network's restructuring is expected to reach complete, at which point leadership positions will be filled through a formal application process. This transition occurs as the government in October, with potential parliamentary discussion and passage prepares new legislation regarding the research network, which is expected to be discussed in Parliament by November. Stipsicz has been proposed as an interim leader to maintain stability during this legislative transition.
