A corruption investigation in Hungary has led to the detention of former Minister of National Development Miklós Seszták and the arrest of a close associate. Prosecutors allege that between 2015 and 2018, Seszták and a former executive of the Hungarian National Asset Management Inc. received over 11 billion forints in illegal advantages. The probe concerns alleged bribes related to Volánbusz Zrt. transport and bus procurement contracts. Investigators claim a construction group offered to return 10 percent of contract values as kickbacks through an intermediary. Authorities have also investigated allegations regarding 9 billion forints in cash reportedly stored in Seszták’s home safes. During an October house search, the National Asset Recovery and Asset Protection Office (NVVH) reported discovering two industrial-grade Wertheim DWS1901 10 RE safes at his residence. Each safe weighs 1,660 kilograms, a type typically used by financial service providers rather than private individuals. While investigators claim data suggests money may have been moved prior to questioning, Seszták and his legal team have denied all allegations of wrongdoing, asserting that no such cash existed. The court has extended Seszták’s detention until January 30, 2027, citing risks of flight, concealment of assets, and potential influence over witnesses. witnesses due to his public role and connections. Recent developments include the arrest of K. Zsolt, an associate suspected of acting as a money courier to aid in the acceptance of bribes. Investigators have also identified two asset management foundations, OAK and Hódvár, containing more than 4.1 billion forints in assets. Although Seszták is not officially listed as a founder or beneficiary, the foundations are managed by his long-time business associate, Éva Csilla Hódos. Additionally, Seszták’s daughter, Sára Seszták, performs asset auditing for these organizations through her family’s law firm. One foundation holds shares in Minotax International Ltd., a Cypriot company previously linked to Seszták’s business circles.
