Péter Magyar has criticized the Hungarian county government system, labeling it redundant and inefficient. He claimed the ruling Fidesz party had emptied these institutions, turning them into “payment centers” or “political pay-off points” for a fragmented opposition. Following a parliamentary vote, Hungary moved to abolish the current system of county assemblies. Magyar suggested that dissolving these assemblies could save tens of billions of forints annually for redirection toward development projects. The legislative changes also included reverting the names of counties and government commissioners, and reducing the Prime Minister’s gross monthly salary to 2.5 million forints if they also serve as a Member of Parliament. Additionally, the Parliament elected members to the Independent Media Board to protect public media independence. While Magyar maintains that the current structure is wasteful, the proposal has faced opposition. Critics and local representatives have contested his claims, noting that the Fidesz government has already systematically reduced the legal powers of these assemblies and disputing the assertion that they function as significant centers of financial mismanagement.
