In late July 2026, Hungarian authorities intensified scrutiny of public money allocated to football clubs. On 21 July, the Budapest police opened a criminal investigation into the financing of Ferencvárosi TC’s Fradi sports complex, a project funded with a 25 billion-forint state grant. The probe follows a fan-group complaint and a referral by the State Audit Office, focusing on whether the grant was spent according to law after a 2022 decree allowed residual funds to cover club operating costs. A week later, on 29 July, the State Audit Office released a separate report finding that Vác City Football Club had misused roughly 270 million forints in public sport-development subsidies. The audit cited falsified bank documents, incorrect accounting of the subsidies as income, and delayed reporting, leading to a criminal complaint. On 17 August, the investigation into Ferencvárosi TC expanded as the state sports secretariat scrutinized the potential diversion of funds. State secretary Attila Kálnoki-Kiss reported that documents suggest 11.2 billion HUF from the original grant was used by the club’s football-operating division to purchase the playing rights of 38 professional players between 2019 and 2024. Officials noted that while the funds were earmarked for infrastructure and construction at the former Építők-sporttelep, almost no progress has been made on those projects in ten years. The secretariat is demanding an explanation for treating infrastructure-designated funds as operational ~~expenses for player acquisitions,~~ expenses, noting that such actions may violate EU competition rules. The ministry indicated that improper use could result in demands for repayment and further legal action. In response to these findings, Ferencváros President Gábor Kubatov stated that all necessary documentation has been provided to prove the funds were used legally and for their intended purposes. He maintained that “everything is in order” and that the money remains within the club’s ecosystem.
