The Hungarian Forint has experienced volatility driven by United States economic indicators, regional energy concerns, and shifts in domestic monetary policy. Initial fluctuations were linked to US inflation data, which fell to 3.4% in July, leading to expectations that the Federal Reserve would maintain current interest rates. While the Forint reacted to rising oil prices and US economic data, it stabilized near the 363 level against the Euro. Subsequent movements showed the Forint fluctuating against the Euro, US Dollar, and Swiss Franc, with energy market risks—such as rising European gas prices and low water levels at the Paks nuclear power plant—posing ongoing threats. At the start of the 36th week of the year, the Forint showed mixed opening and increased weakness compared to the previous Monday. The Euro traded at approximately 365.26 HUF, the US Dollar at 315.14 HUF, and the Swiss Franc at 389.32 HUF. Following this period of weakness, the Forint experienced a significant rally. This resurgence was driven by reports that the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) may conclude its interest rate cutting cycle this autumn and could lower its inflation target from 3 percent to 2.5 percent for 2026 during its September meeting. In response to recent rate cuts, financial institutions have begun reducing interest rates on promotional fixed-term deposits. Concurrently, the market value of household investment funds reached a record 17.5 trillion forints, an 18 percent increase over the past year. In addition to monetary shifts, Hungary is implementing fiscal reforms. While maintaining the EU’s highest standard VAT rate of 27 percent, the government has introduced targeted reductions: VAT on prescription drugs fell to 0 percent on September 1, 2026, and VAT on firewood is scheduled to drop from 27 percent to 5 percent on September 15. By mid-September 2026, the Forint faced renewed weakness.
