Hungarian GP Sainz penalties
Entities: Oscar Piastri · Carlos Sainz · blue flag system · McLaren · Lando Norris
Overview
During the first free‑practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix on 24 July 2026, stewards cleared Carlos Sainz of any breach of the International Sporting Code after reviewing his overtaking manoeuvre. In the same session Red Bull Racing was fined €400 after driver Isack Hadjar exceeded the pit‑lane speed limit, and Max Verstappen was summoned but faced no further sanction.
On race day, Oscar Piastri started from pole, overtook Lando Norris and led the opening laps. While serving his second pit stop he encountered back‑marker Sainz, who was battling Fernando Alonso. Contact at Turn 2 caused Piastri to lose time, allowing Norris to inherit the lead and ultimately win. Piastri later retired when a gearbox failure forced his McLaren to stop on the side of the track, after which he criticised Sainz on the team radio.
Stewards ruled Sainz wholly at fault for the lap‑38 collision, imposing a five‑second time penalty and noting a blue‑flag signalling malfunction that left Sainz unaware he was being lapped. The incident dropped Sainz to 18th place. Sainz subsequently explained he did not see Piastri in his blind spot.
