Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy has filed a prosecution report alleging massive overpricing in the operation of the M6 motorway. Vitézy claims that the previous administration’s decision to award the Érd to Dunaújváros section to Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. (MKIF) resulted in a potential 105 billion forint loss to the Hungarian budget. He characterized the discrepancy between previous contract estimates and current operator costs as a “threefold overpricing.” In response to these allegations, Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced intentions to end what he described as a massive highway concession scheme designed to siphon public funds to political allies. He alleged that the previous administration created one of the world’s largest motorway concessions to benefit associates. The Fidesz parliamentary group has countered these claims, accusing Minister Vitézy of lying and failing to provide sufficient evidence regarding the M6 motorway concession or the alleged 149 billion forint overpricing. Fidesz characterized the dispute as a “political circus” intended to place Hungarian transport infrastructure under foreign control. Expanding on these efforts, Prime Minister Magyar and Minister Vitézy have announced the termination of a 35-year motorway concession agreement involving MKIF. The government intends to return the operation and maintenance of much of the national motorway network to state control. The administration characterizes the deal, signed in 2022 and linked to businessmen Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szijj, as a mechanism for draining public funds. Vitézy estimated the total nominal value of the contract at approximately HUF 23,000 billion through 2057, arguing that state operation could be 53 percent cheaper than the current arrangement. Prime Minister Magyar has further described the contract as a “felfoghatatlan méretű, 23 ezer milliárd forintos mutyi” (unimaginable scale, 23 trillion forint corruption).
