Hungarian legislative proposal on sports governance

Overview

The Hungarian government has introduced a legislative proposal to the Parliament aimed at separating sports management from political influence. The draft law seeks to establish strict conflict-of-interest rules to ensure transparency and prevent political connections from dictating professional activities or sports financing.

Under the proposed regulations, high-ranking officials—including ministers, state secretaries, members of Parliament, MEPs, and county assembly presidents—would be prohibited from holding leadership positions in sports associations, federations, or businesses that employ more than 500 athletes. This restriction would apply during their term of office and for four years following their tenure.

State Secretary for Sport Attila Kálnoki-Kiss noted that while some have referred to the bill as the ‘Lex Kubatov’ in reference to Fidesz politician Gábor Kubatov, the legislation is intended to address systemic distortions rather than target specific individuals. If passed, current and former politicians will be required to declare whether they are affected by these new regulations.
