Hungarian social sector wage disputes

Overview

Social sector workers in Hungary have been protesting to demand an immediate 25 percent wage increase and improved working conditions. Organized by the Social Sector Workers' Union (SZÁD), demonstrators argued that current pay levels cause professional shortages and high staff turnover. Prime Minister Péter Magyar met with protesters, stating that while the government previously promised a 20–25 percent increase in two stages, the current depleted budget makes immediate large-scale raises difficult.

By October, labor unions representing the sector reported a lack of progress regarding the scheduling of these raises. Representatives from the Social Sector Interest Negotiation Forum (SZÁÉF), SZÁD, and the Trade Union of Hungarian Civil Servants, Public Employees and Public Service Workers (MKKSZ) noted they had not yet received a formal written proposal for the two-step increase. Union leaders warned that failing to implement timely adjustments could lead to a mass exodus of professionals, and they emphasized that a 25 percent raise should serve only as a starting point to align social sector wages with those in the healthcare and education sectors.
