Hungary cultural institution leadership overhaul

In late July 2026, Hungary’s Ministry of Culture dismissed the directors of three major state‑run cultural institutions—the National Széchényi Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Hungarian Natural History Museum—following an audit that cited employee complaints and a need for improved workplace safety and professional standards. The dismissals were presented as part of a broader restructuring that includes decentralising the Hungarian National Museum’s Central Collections Centre (MNM KK) and enhancing institutional autonomy.

A few days later, interim directors were appointed to the same institutions. Gerencsér Judit took charge of the National Széchényi Library, Jékely Zsombor became head of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Babocsay Gergely assumed leadership of the Natural History Museum. The appointments, approved by Culture Minister Zoltán Tarr, task the new heads with modernising collection systems and overseeing the phased reduction of the MNM KK. The rapid transition reflects the government’s effort to implement the audit’s recommendations and reshape Hungary’s cultural sector.

The two events illustrate a coordinated government initiative to overhaul leadership and operational structures within the country’s key cultural establishments.
