Hungary Eximbank loan investigations

Following the July 2026 announcement by Prime Minister Péter Magyar that a criminal probe would examine the €1 billion Eximbank loan to North Macedonia, the Ministry of Economy and Energy filed formal police complaints covering four Eximbank contracts totalling about 1 trillion forints. The complaints detail a 59‑billion‑forint loan for converting a former Sofitel hotel, a 126‑billion‑forint bond financing for the Kasomeno‑Mwenda toll‑road linking Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, a 576‑billion‑forint loan to Egypt’s state railway for Russian‑built rolling stock, and a 360‑billion‑forint arrangement for the Macedonian loan. Authorities flagged unusually high risk, weak collateral and alleged bypassing of internal risk‑assessment rules, noting that roughly 80 % of the African project exposure (≈ 101 billion forints) is state‑guaranteed. The investigations will determine who authorised the irregularities and may lead to criminal prosecution. The probe also revisits concerns that funds intended for Hungarian firms may have been diverted to support foreign political allies. The ongoing anti‑corruption drive aligns with Hungary’s preparation to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
