Hyderabad protests against electoral roll revisions

Overview

Protests have emerged in Hyderabad against the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Demonstrators, including actor and activist Prakash Raj, have characterized the SIR as a “murder of democracy,” alleging that the process functions as a mass deletion of names from electoral rolls rather than a verification drive. Critics claim citizens, such as daily wage workers, are being removed for being absent during official visits, and that millions of appeals regarding these deletions remain pending.

As the demonstrations have continued, the scale of the protests has grown. On October 24, more than 2,000 protesters from various civil society groups—including students, farmers, and Dalit communities—formed a human chain at Tank Bund. Organized by the collective People Against the SIR, the demonstrators have expanded their demands to include the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the repeal of the CEC Act of 2023. Protesters have alleged that approximately 13.4 crore voters have been removed from rolls across India.
