Hydro has established a climate strategy focused on reducing CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, with the goal of achieving net-zero aluminium production by 2050 or earlier. The company aims to support a green transition through responsible production methods and circular solutions. As part of these sustainability efforts, Hydro launched two low-carbon aluminium product lines: REDUXA and CIRCAL. REDUXA is verified by DNV to deliver a carbon footprint of no more than 4 kg CO2e per kilogram of aluminium. CIRCAL, a premium offering, contains at least 75% post-consumer waste and achieves an average footprint of 1.9 kg CO2e per kilogram. These reduced emissions are attributed to the use of renewable hydroelectric power, efficient electrolytic technology, and oversight of the entire value chain from bauxite extraction to recycling. To further advance these goals, Hydro is focusing on technological innovation to reduce energy consumption and emissions. In Norway, the company leverages hydropower, wind, and solar energy for primary production. A significant development includes the Karmøy technology pilot plant, which utilizes proprietary HAL4e technology to produce highly energy-efficient primary aluminium. This technology has also been implemented at the Husnes production facility to double its capacity. Hydro currently operates in over 40 countries with approximately 32,000 employees across 140 locations.
