Hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge rail implementation in Italy
Overview
Sardinia is initiating a project to launch the world’s first green hydrogen-powered trains for narrow-gauge railways. Supported by a 75 million euro investment, three production plants are being established in Mandas, Macomer, and Alghero to produce hydrogen, with the Mandas facility utilizing solar energy. The regional transport company, Arst, is investing 136 million euros to acquire ten hydrogen trains from Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail, a move expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 2,100 tons annually compared to diesel models.
Stadler Rail has since unveiled these narrow-gauge hydrogen trains and is manufacturing a total of 21 units for three Italian operators: Arst in Sardinia, Ferrovie della Calabria in Calabria, and Ferrovia Circumetnea in Sicily. To facilitate the transition from diesel to sustainable technology, Stadler has commissioned a specialized four-kilometer test track in Hemishofen, Switzerland, featuring a 950-millimeter gauge to test propulsion and speed before deployment in Italy.
