The patient had attempted to self-treat for perceived low calcium, but doctors determined the issue was actually hypokalemia caused by hyperthyroidism. Recovery required treating both the potassium deficiency and the underlying thyroid condition. Medical experts noted that the symptoms of low calcium and low potassium can be similar, which may lead to dangerous misdiagnoses.
