Hypothesis of ancient solar super-Earth ingestion

Overview

Research published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society suggests that the Sun may have consumed a super-Earth-sized planet billions of years ago during its early history.

Led by Professor Mutlu Yıldız of Ege University, the study utilized stellar evolution modeling to propose that a planet with approximately 5 to 10 times the mass of Earth could have fallen into the young Sun. This hypothesis is being used to address several astronomical discrepancies, including the Sun’s unusually low lithium abundance and inconsistencies between standard solar models and helioseismic observations regarding the star’s internal structure and sound-speed profile.

The models indicate that a compact rocky world could have penetrated the Sun’s outer layers, leaving a lasting chemical “fingerprint” deep within the solar interior. This event may also explain why super-Earths, which are common in other planetary systems, appear to be absent from our own solar system.
