Iberian Peninsula high-speed rail expansion
Overview
High-speed rail services and infrastructure are expanding across the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain, Renfe is managing a major procurement process to acquire up to 40 new high-speed trains, valued at a maximum of 1.777 billion euros, with Hitachi and Siemens identified as primary contenders following the withdrawal of Alstom and Talgo.
This infrastructure development coincides with rising passenger demand. High-speed rail has become a primary travel alternative in the region, with Renfe reporting record-breaking service levels and Portugal’s operator, CP, noting its highest passenger numbers of the century at the end of 2025.
However, the network is facing increasing reliability and capacity challenges. A recent train fire on the Madrid-Barcelona line near Ricla, Zaragoza, has caused significant disruptions. The incident has forced traffic to operate on a single track between Ricla and Plasencia de Jalón, reducing capacity and increasing travel times. Renfe has implemented an operational plan using double-composition trains to maintain mobility, but full service is not expected to return to normal until next week due to the complexity of removing the damaged locomotive.
The fire has intensified concerns regarding infrastructure reliability. Union representatives from Semaf stated they had previously warned of technical risks regarding the S100 Alstom model involved, citing issues such as “excessive temperatures and motor failures.” Additionally, the sector faces upcoming labor challenges, as Ouigo drivers have called for a six-day strike between late October and early December, citing excessive working hours and uncompensated shifts.
