Spain is hosting a series of diplomatic events in Madrid involving 22 Ibero-American nations. Following preparations for the XXX Ibero-American Summit scheduled for November 4 and 5, the XII Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum convened on October 1 and 2 at the Congress of Deputies and the Spanish Senate. Presided over by King Felipe VI, the forum brought together legislative representatives to discuss artificial intelligence, gender equality, and “threats to democracy,” including political fragmentation, polarization, disinformation, and populism. Costa Rican Legislative Assembly President Yara Jiménez co-presided over the event, while Mexican Senator Mario Vázquez participated in sessions regarding democratic threats, emphasizing the necessity of international dialogue. High-level delegations have been active during the forum. Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel led a delegation of national senators, meeting with Spanish Senate President Pedro Rollán to strengthen institutional ties. During the sessions, Villarruel also emphasized the importance of industrial employment and the role of SMEs. Additionally, Chilean Senate President Paulina Núñez participated in the forum and met with Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Spanish opposition, to discuss political challenges and democratic institutions. Other notable participants include Honduran National Congress President Tomás Zambrano, who highlighted the need for electoral reforms and the protection of freedom of expression, as well as representatives from Cuba and Chile. The forum also addressed security concerns, specifically citizen safety and combating drug trafficking.
