An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded a man in Austin, Texas, on a Sunday afternoon in the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane near U.S. 183. Local official Mike Siegel reported that the officer rammed the victim’s vehicle before exiting a federal vehicle and firing at least five shots. The wounded man has been identified by family and legal counsel as 28-year-old Venezuelan national Wilber ~~Garcés.~~ Garcés Perez. He was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to the torso. A dark blue Toyota Corolla at the scene sustained visible damage and bullet holes in the passenger-side door. While ICE is leading the investigation, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that Austin police officers were not involved in the initial operation. However, the Austin Police Department’s special investigation unit has since responded to the scene. Mayor Watson expressed skepticism regarding the agency conducting its own inquiry and has called for the Austin Police Department and the Texas Rangers to participate to provide “clear, third-party eyes” and ensure transparency. U.S. Representative Greg Casar has demanded a full, independent investigation and the immediate release of all body-camera footage, describing the event as a “horror” and part of a “disturbing pattern” of violence involving federal agents. Following the incident, dozens of protesters gathered at the scene to demonstrate against ICE operations. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet provided a detailed response.
