An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, a Dominican national, during an enforcement operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. The incident occurred as agents attempted to arrest Belgal, who authorities state has a criminal record including a grand larceny conviction. At least one agent discharged seven rounds at Belgal’s vehicle; he was struck in the neck and transported to a hospital where he remains conscious. A five-year-old child was in the backseat during the shooting but was unharmed and has been placed in the care of a relative. The Department of Homeland Security defended the use of force, alleging Belgal attempted to drive his vehicle into agents. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are currently investigating the incident. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the shooting as an ‘outrage’ and an ‘unacceptable and extremely serious situation,’ noting that agents wore masks and high-visibility vests. Mamdani reported that attempts to negotiate Belgal’s release with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin were unsuccessful. Governor Kathy Hochul has also called for a transparent investigation and the release of body camera footage. Congressman Adriano Espaillat reported that federal agents prevented him and the victim's family from visiting Belgal at the hospital. The shooting has led to widespread protests in the Bronx, where demonstrators confronted federal agents and police. During the unrest, some protesters directed criticism toward Mayor Mamdani, accusing him of being complicit.
