Iceland EU accession and academic venue disputes

Disputes have emerged in Iceland regarding the country's potential accession to the European Union and the use of academic venues for political debate. The controversy began when a lecture by Swiss lawyer Carl Baudenbacher on EU membership was scheduled in the University of Iceland's main hall. Critics alleged the space was being used for propaganda by the nationalist group Áfram Ísland. In response to these tensions, the university's Rector relocated the lecture to a different venue, citing the undisclosed involvement of the Áfram Ísland movement. This relocation sparked accusations from members of the Independence Party and former professors that the university was exercising political influence and undermining academic freedom.

Parallel to the university dispute, the broader EU debate has intensified. As a referendum on EU membership approaches on August 29, 2026, internal political debates have intensified. The Fisheries Iceland (SFS) association has warned that EU membership would shift control over marine resources to EU institutions, potentially removing current caps on foreign ownership in fishing companies. In the agricultural sector, the Farmers Association of Iceland has warned of a loss of decision-making power and the impact of removing import tariffs, though Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir suggested membership could offer new opportunities for farmers.

International voices have also entered the fray. British Brexit advocate Daniel Hannan published an article in the Daily Telegraph arguing that Iceland should protect its sovereignty from Brussels. While some Icelandic figures praised his stance, others, such as actor Felix Bergsson, criticized the article, accusing Hannan of spreading misinformation.
