Identification of 1974 Cyprus conflict victims
Overview
Recent archaeological and forensic efforts in Cyprus have focused on identifying victims of violence during the 1974 conflict.
In Nicosia, excavations at Athalassa Hospital have uncovered the remains of 33 people—including 31 patients and two nurses—who were killed during a Turkish Air Force bombing on July 20, 1974. The exhumations, led by archaeologist Mikhalis Iakovidis, revealed remains wrapped in blankets alongside personal items such as medication and clothing, confirming the use of makeshift graves following the attack.
Separately, the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) has utilized DNA testing to identify 15 Turkish Cypriot victims from the Atlılar massacre. These individuals were part of a group of 37 civilians killed in the villages of Atlılar, Muratağa, and Sandallar on August 14, 1974. The identified group includes eight children, such as 40-day-old Seldem Ali Osman and 16-month-old Betül Arnavut. A state ceremony is scheduled for September 1 to honor the deceased.
