Crimes against humanity trials and victim identification in-
In Córdoba, Argentina, the 20th trial for crimes against humanity has commenced, specifically the Gutiérrez/Di Santo case. This trial investigates the responsibility of 21 defendants for state-sponsored crimes committed during the 1976–1983 military dictatorship, focusing on illegal deprivation of liberty, torture, and forced disappearances involving more than 70 victims, primarily in the Río Cuarto region. Parallel to these judicial proceedings, the identification of victims from the dictatorship era continues. Federal Judge Miguel Hugo Vaca Narvaja previously has confirmed the identification of eight additional victims—four men and four women—whose remains were recovered from the Loma del Torito area within the La Calera military garrison. This site is adjacent to the former La Perla clandestine detention and extermination center. Through the work of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) and the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Córdoba Judiciary, 38 individuals have been identified at this specific site since the start of the 2025 excavation campaign. The investigation utilized a 1979 aerial photograph to guide excavations, which began on September 16, 2025. The most recently identified individuals include Néstor Albino Acosta Ludueña, Pascual Delfín Ludueña Leyva, Claudio Norberto Nardini Lambir, Cecilia Alicia Pessina Libro de Ávila, Mónica Protti de Guillén, Mercedes del Valle Ramírez Agüero, María Luisa Salto Segovia, and Juan Carlos Soulier Guillén. Investigators have suggested that military forces may have used heavy machinery in 1979 to move and hide remains to conceal evidence of crimes against humanity ahead of an inspection by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). Judicial officials and human rights organizations have noted that these identifications provide critical evidence in the ongoing pursuit of justice.
