Overview

The 36th annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, which honors research that ‘first makes people laugh, and then makes them think,’ was held in Zurich, Switzerland, on September 3, 2026. This event marked the first time in 35 years that the ceremony was hosted outside of the United States.

Organizers, led by Marc Abrahams of the Annals of Improbable Research, attributed the relocation to strict U.S. visa policies, travel concerns, and an increasingly hostile climate toward science in the U.S. Abrahams stated it would not be responsible to ask winners or journalists to travel to the U.S. given these conditions.

Ten research teams received awards for unusual studies, including the evolutionary history of kissing, the nutritional value of cockroach milk, and the aerodynamics of nose-blowing. This year’s theme was ‘fungi,’ and winners received trophies shaped like a slice of blue cheese being stepped on by a foot, along with 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollars. Future ceremonies are expected to rotate through various European cities, with Antwerp, Belgium, scheduled to host the 2027 event.
