Olympique de Marseille continues to navigate intense financial pressure as it seeks to reduce its wage bill to satisfy UEFA and DNCG regulations. Owner Frank McCourt has mandated player sales to avoid potential sanctions, including the risk of administrative relegation to Ligue 2. Squad changes have been marked by the departure of defender Leonardo Balerdi to AS Roma on a loan deal with a mandatory purchase option. To address squad needs, the club has monitored various players, including goalkeeper Illan Meslier and free agents like Sofiane Boufal. Internal tensions regarding winger Igor Paixão have evolved through several stages. Despite significant interest from clubs like Sunderland and the financial pressure to sell, Paixão remained at the club following the summer transfer window. Manager Bruno Genesio secured his retention by promising the player a central role, particularly following the departures of Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange noted that Paixão “never expressed a desire to leave” and appeared “very happy” at the time. However, relations between Paixão and Genesio recently faced friction, highlighted by a disagreement during a match against Troyes where the player refused to shake the manager’s hand. While Paixão has since scored in a 5-2 victory over Angers and Genesio has expressed continued confidence, the player’s long-term future remains unsettled. Paixão indicated that while he stayed during the summer to support the club, he is considering a departure, potentially as early as next summer. Recent reports indicate Leeds United is monitoring Paixão as Marseille’s financial constraints persist. Following a €35 million move from Feyenoord in 2025, the Brazilian winger has struggled to replicate his previous form, recording no goals and only one assist in the current season.
