IIHS vehicle safety and mortality study

Overview

An Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study of 2023-model-year vehicles has identified significant disparities in driver and occupant mortality rates based on vehicle type.

Small cars, sports cars, and muscle cars—such as the Kia Rio and Nissan Versa—recorded the highest driver death rates. In contrast, luxury SUVs like the BMW X5 and Volvo XC90 showed some of the lowest driver death rates.

Large pickups and SUVs represent a high risk to other motorists. While providing high levels of protection for their own occupants, these larger vehicles contribute significantly to "other-driver" death rates. The Ram 3500 Crew Cab recorded the highest rate of deaths among other motorists, and several Stellantis models were among the most lethal for third parties in collisions.
