IIT Madras AI and tech initiatives

In late July 2026 the Indian Institute of Technology Madras announced a series of AI‑focused programmes aimed at strengthening India’s technology sector. On August 1‑2 it hosted the third Digital India RISC‑V (DIR‑V) Symposium, bringing together government officials, industry leaders, academia and startups to discuss indigenous processor designs, secure computing and the growing RISC‑V ecosystem as part of India’s push to become a global semiconductor hub. Concurrently, IIT Madras launched a week‑long intensive course, “Building a Successful AI Startup,” (August 10‑14) led by former Google Search VP Lakshmi Shankar, to train students and early‑stage entrepreneurs in AI‑driven product development, market validation, fundraising and scaling, with a seed‑funding prize for the winning team.

The institute’s AI agenda broadened on July 31 when it hosted the inaugural BIMSTEC AI Road Safety Hackathon. Organized with the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the competition invited participants from the seven BIMSTEC nations to develop data‑driven AI solutions for road safety, a critical issue for a region of 1.8 billion people. Team Cipher won the hackathon, and the Ministry pledged mentorship for shortlisted projects to facilitate wider regional deployment. Together, these events illustrate IIT Madras’s expanding role in fostering AI research, entrepreneurship and cross‑border collaboration across multiple technology domains.
