The succession process for the Awujale of Ijebuland has been marked by internal conflict and legal disputes within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House. Following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the selection process faced interruptions, including allegations that the Ogun State government locked the Awujale Palace in January 2026 to prevent kingmakers from meeting. Internal tensions within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House escalated due to allegations of financial inducement, document manipulation, and a “deliberate dereliction of sacred duty” regarding the classification of candidates. A fact-finding committee reported a “manifest breakdown of unity, communication, and cohesion” among leadership, leading to the removal of Chairman Abdulateef Owoyemi, Vice-Chairman Prof. Fassy Yusuf, and Deputy Chairman Adeodokun Ajidagba. In response to the stalled selection process, leaders of the ruling house filed a lawsuit in the Ogun State High Court against Governor Dapo Abiodun, the state’s Attorney-General, and the Awujale kingmakers. The claimants argue they have fulfilled their statutory responsibilities by completing internal nominations within the legally prescribed timeframe.
