IKEA and Kodiak autonomous freight launch in Texas

Overview

IKEA and technology firm Kodiak are preparing to launch a driverless freight service in Texas by the end of 2026. The autonomous service will focus on middle-mile logistics, specifically a route connecting an IKEA distribution center in Baytown to a retail store in Frisco via Interstate 45.

The transition follows a four-year pilot program in which Kodiak transported over 1,300 loads and logged more than 750,000 miles with a safety observer on board. During these trials, the company maintained a “nearly perfect” on-time delivery record.

Implementation remains dependent on Kodiak completing its highway safety case to demonstrate that its ‘Kodiak Driver’ system can operate securely without human intervention. The companies suggest that shifting long-haul tasks to autonomous vehicles could improve driver working conditions by allowing human drivers to focus on local routes.
