Illegal border crossings in Northern Cyprus

Overview

Authorities in Northern Cyprus apprehended a group of migrants attempting to cross into Southern Cyprus through a first-degree military restricted zone in the Haspolat region.

The group, consisting of five Iranian nationals and two children, was intercepted by sentry soldiers. Investigations indicated the family had traveled from Iran through Turkey to reach Northern Cyprus in search of work in the south.

A Pakistani national, identified as Z. A., was arrested for allegedly arranging the illegal crossing for a fee of 2,250 euros. Z. A., who holds student status, admitted to having used illegal routes to cross between the north and south previously. Following court proceedings in Lefkoşa, the Iranian migrants were ordered to be held for six days, while the Pakistani suspect was remanded in custody for up to 30 days on human trafficking charges.
