Illegal cat blood trade investigation in Monte Alto

Civil Police in Monte Alto, São Paulo, uncovered a clandestine network involved in the illegal collection and sale of cat blood. Two veterinarians, Thaís Daniele Antonussi and Renato Franco, were charged with animal cruelty and criminal association. Investigators reported that the group operated a structured scheme where blood was collected from sedated cats—often showing signs of malnutrition and risk of death from hypovolemia—and sold in 50 ml bags for between R$ 500 and R$ 800 per unit.

In response to the investigation, defense attorney Daniel Seixas Rondi stated that Antonussi acted in good faith, believing the services she contracted were legal and properly documented. The defense also noted that Antonussi had not yet been heard by the Civil Police despite the investigation lasting nearly a year. While the São Paulo Public Ministry sought to suspend the defendants' professional and academic activities, the Court of Monte Alto denied these requests, ruling that such measures would be “premature punishment.”
