In late June 2026 Greek police dismantled a large ring that tampered with analog and digital electricity meters, resulting in five arrests and uncovering at least 105 illegal modifications dating back to 2017. A coordinated raid on 3 July in Acharnes, Attica, arrested 14 individuals and seized 715 m of illicit cabling; a separate incident on 13 July on Crete saw a utility crew assaulted while upgrading meters, prompting calls for better protection of utility staff. At the same time, Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy accelerated its regularisation programme. By 17 July nine distribution companies had upgraded roughly 500,000 meters to a tiered‑tariff system, launched a 24‑hour hotline and WhatsApp contact, and set up a neutral grievance committee to review theft‑related fines before prosecution. On 27 July the ministry announced a wider rollout of "meter‑ghafir" aggregate smart meters that monitor whole buildings, detect non‑technical theft and transmit data via SIM cards, with purchase and installation costs borne by property owners or occupants. On 31 July the ministry introduced a new residential tariff structure: the first 0‑50 kWh tier remains at 68 piastres/kWh, while higher tiers rise by an average of 12 %. Specific rates now stand at about 0.87 EGP/kWh for 51‑100 kWh, 1.06 EGP/kWh for 101‑200 kWh, and ~~2.89~~ roughly 2.88 EGP/kWh for consumption above 1,000 kWh; the unified‑meter tariff is fixed at 2.74 EGP/kWh. The state will continue to subsidise the gap, allocating about 100 billion EGP annually. Under the new scheme consumers cover roughly 25 % of the bill at 50 kWh (state subsidy ≈ 103 EGP) and 30 % at 100 kWh (state subsidy ≈ 191 ~~EGP).
