Illegal firearms seizures in Thailand
Overview
Thai authorities have conducted multiple operations to intercept illegal firearms and ammunition across different provinces.
In Trat Province, the Royal Thai Navy and Marine Police disrupted a transnational smuggling operation at Direk Pier. Authorities seized two AK-47 assault rifles and 24,405 rounds of ammunition. The investigation suggests the smuggling ring used a speedboat to collect goods from foreign nationals in open waters, transporting weapons from Cambodia into Thailand. One suspect was arrested, while others escaped.
Subsequent raids in Ayutthaya and Chon Buri resulted in further seizures. In Ayutthaya, police arrested a suspect for allegedly smuggling military-style assault rifles and handguns using false commercial shipping declarations. In Chon Buri, a factory worker was apprehended after using a firearm to intimidate colleagues; a search revealed nine homemade firearms, including various pistols and rifles.
