In Peru, indigenous groups and local residents have raised alarms regarding illegal and artisanal mining activities and their impact on water resources. On August 11, 2026, the Federation of Native Communities of the Curaray (FECONCU) announced the total closure of the Curaray River, effective August 25, 2026. The federation cited threats to water quality, aquatic fauna, and food security caused by illegal mining in the basin. FECONCU requested intervention from the Peruvian National Police, the Navy, and environmental prosecutors, citing “insufficient state presence.” By late August, residents in the Aymaraes province, specifically within the Piscoya and Huancapampa communities, reported suspected artisanal mining near the Parcca creek. This water source is critical for irrigating local agricultural land. Community members expressed concerns that mining debris is accumulating near the creek, potentially contaminating the water supply. Residents noted that despite filing complaints with the Regional Directorate of Energy and Mines, the National Water Authority, and the local municipality, no concrete measures have been taken to resolve the issue. In addition to mining concerns, authorities in Puno have warned of a worsening water crisis. Projections indicate that by 2027, the region will face severe water stress due to the global El Niño phenomenon. This anticipated deficit threatens both agricultural and livestock activities in the high-altitude region, prompting calls for urgent water harvesting projects and contingency planning.
