Security operations targeting illegal mining in Niger State, Nigeria, have led to a significant humanitarian crisis. Following the arrest of suspected illegal miners in the Gurara and Wushishi-Lukoto areas by the Nigerian Army on September 15 and 16, 2026, at least 37 detainees died while in custody at a facility managed by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna. Conflicting accounts regarding the cause of death have emerged. While the NSCDC attributed the fatalities to a suspected disease outbreak, survivors and intelligence reports suggest suffocation due to overcrowding and inadequate ventilation. Survivors described extreme heat and difficulty breathing, with reports indicating approximately 65 prisoners were crowded into a single cell. Some detainees reportedly resorted to drinking urine to survive due to a lack of water. Some relatives have also accused officials of demanding payments to release detainees. In response to the incident, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the immediate suspension of the NSCDC commandant for Niger State, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, pending a full investigation. President Bola Tinubu has also ordered a full and transparent investigation, demanding accountability and stating that officials found negligent or abusive must be prosecuted. The NSCDC has constituted an internal investigative team, and police investigations are underway. Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago described the event as a “tragedy” and “sad,” establishing a committee of inquiry to oversee forensic and medical examinations, including autopsies. The state government has declared a three-day period of mourning. The deaths have triggered widespread protests in Minna, involving youths and ~~relatives.~~ relatives, which included attacks on public buildings. To maintain order following the unrest, a 24-hour curfew has been imposed in Minna and a scheduled political rally has been cancelled.
