An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission is scheduled to visit Pakistan in September 2026 to conduct the fourth review of the country’s $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF). The mission will focus on proposed legislation for the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), specifically the Pakistan Sovereign Wealth Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aims to strengthen governance and implement fiscal safeguards. The review will also evaluate progress regarding state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the implementation of the Governance and Anti-Corruption Diagnostics (GCD) Assessment Report. Review talks and Article IV consultations are set to begin on September 22 in Karachi and Islamabad. The discussions are expected to last two weeks. IMF Resident Mission Chief Mahir Binci confirmed the visit will include economic health checks and a scrutiny of the implementation plan for the GCD report. This Article IV consultation follows a two-year pause in such assessments. Additionally, the Pakistani government has reportedly submitted updated monthly and annual import data to the IMF to resolve discrepancies totaling billions of dollars. The results of the consultation will be presented to the IMF Executive Board and released to the public.
