The most substantial life-saving impacts were noted in Florida, the Southwest, and along the Gulf Coast, though researchers noted that mortality risks can still rise during extreme heat even with air conditioning use. A Yale University study expanding on this data, which analyzed 30 million death records across 3,108 counties, found that actual usage of cooling systems is a more accurate predictor of survival than mere ownership, as many households struggle with energy costs. The study also noted that the life-saving effect tends to plateau after a certain level of use. Despite these public health benefits, the increased reliance on cooling presents environmental challenges. Projections from the International Energy Agency and the United Nations Environment Programme suggest global electricity demand for cooling could triple. This shift may cause heat-trapping gas emissions to rise from 4.5 billion to 7.2 billion tons over the next 25 years due to fossil fuel-based electricity generation. Furthermore, the process of expelling heat from indoors to the outdoors contributes to the urban heat island effect, potentially raising ambient temperatures in densely populated cities and creating a cycle of increased demand. In response, various nations are implementing measures to manage energy use. Countries such as Bangladesh, Singapore, and the Philippines have established cooling limits or mandates, while the Indian government has proposed temperature limits for air conditioning units for 2025.
