Impact of cortisol on metabolism metabolism, health, and health cognition

Cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, is essential for regulating blood pressure, glucose metabolism, and immune responses. While it helps mobilize energy during acute stress, prolonged elevation is linked to various physiological issues. Factors contributing to elevated cortisol include hormonal shifts in individuals over 50, irregular eating habits, restrictive dieting, and excessive physical training without adequate recovery. Such imbalances can lead to symptoms such as chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, acne, irritability, and specific patterns of weight gain, particularly abdominal and facial fat. In women, high levels may also cause irregular menstruation. Severe indicators of high cortisol may include muscle weakness, purple stretch marks, and early-onset osteoporosis. Medical diagnosis typically involves analyzing blood, urine, or saliva. Recent research has expanded the understanding of cortisol’s long-term impact, specifically regarding cognitive health in aging populations. A study of nearly 3,900 older adults from the Chicago Health and Aging Project suggests that high overall cortisol levels are linked to faster declines in thinking skills. Interestingly, the study found that individuals with greater variation in cortisol levels throughout the day tended to experience slower cognitive decline. The research also noted racial differences in hormone patterns, noting that Black participants exhibited lower overall cortisol levels and flatter morning-to-evening patterns compared to white participants, though the relationship between cortisol patterns and cognitive decline rates remained similar across both groups.
