Impact of Russian invasion on Ukrainian education

Overview

As the fifth school year since the Russian invasion began, approximately 3.5 million students have returned to classes under significant security constraints, including nearly 250,000 children entering the school system for the first time.

Educational infrastructure remains heavily impacted by Russian strikes. In Kyiv alone, 107 educational facilities were damaged in 2026. To ensure safety, local authorities determine teaching methods based on the availability of bomb shelters; currently, approximately 82 percent of schools conducting in-person instruction have access to a shelter.

Learning models continue to shift based on regional security. While 2.2 million students attend in-person, 2,500 schools are utilizing hybrid models and 1,300 schools have moved to exclusively remote instruction. In Kharkiv, education is largely restricted to specialized underground facilities, while hybrid learning remains common in Odesa and Chernihiv.

The curriculum is also adapting to the wartime reality. High school students are now being introduced to a ‘Defense of Ukraine’ subject, which includes instruction on drones, first aid, and emergency management.

Beyond physical damage, the war has impacted academic outcomes and demographics. The number of top-performing students in Kyiv has decreased by approximately 40 percent since September 2022, and standardized test scores in Ukrainian language, mathematics, and history have declined. Furthermore, the number of first-graders has dropped by 46.5 percent compared to seven years ago, a decline attributed to falling birth rates and mass emigration. Teachers continue to provide emotional support for “war children” who have experienced trauma, navigating what Ana Pucova, co-founder of the humanitarian foundation savED, describes as a “continuous obstacle course.”
