Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania is expanding its production of large-scale battery-electric ferries for international markets. In August 2026, the company commenced the transport of Hull 096—the world's largest battery-electric ship—from Tasmania to South America. The 130-meter, 2,100-passenger vessel vessel, to be named ‘China Zorrilla’, is destined for being transported via the Buquebus ferry service heavy-lift vessel Black Marlin on a 40-day voyage. This transport method was chosen due to operate between Argentina and Uruguay. the limitations of current maritime battery technology for long-distance ocean crossings. Originally designed for LNG, the vessel was converted to full battery power in 2023 and features over 40MWh of battery storage. The ship is being transported via the heavy-lift vessel Black Marlin on a 40-day voyage, following a loading process described as “one of the most complex maritime operations in the region's history.” Following its departure from Hobart on 5 August 2026, the vessel, which will be named ‘China Zorrilla’, is undergoing a transit to begin service across the Río de la Plata between Buenos Aires and Colonia. The ship’s Corvus Energy battery installation weighs over 250 tonnes and tonnes, which is approximately four times larger than any previous maritime battery installation. Following its departure from Hobart, the vessel is undergoing transit to begin service for the Buquebus ferry service between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colonia, Uruguay. Once it reaches the Río de la Plata, the ship will undergo final commissioning. Incat President Robert Clifford stated the launch marks a milestone for sustainable maritime transport and showcases the viability of large-scale zero-emission ferries. Concurrently, Incat is undertaking a maritime electrification project for Denmark. The company is Denmark, constructing three 129-meter electric ferries for operator Molslinjen to serve the Kattegat region, specifically operating routes between Aarhus, Ebeltoft, and Odden. region. These vessels will have a capacity of up to 1,500 passengers per trip and are expected to reach speeds of approximately 74 km/h (40 knots) using utilize Wärtsilä water jet propulsion technology. The project will and be supported by a high-capacity automatic charging infrastructure developed by Wabtec, capable of supplying up to 58 MW of power. Wabtec. Following these deliveries, Incat Tasmania plans to focus on a new shipbuilding program involving five large aluminium electric vessels.
