Two separate incidents occurred in the Kolonos district of Athens within a 24-hour period. On October 21, 2026, an explosion occurred at an apartment building on Platonos Street during the inspection of a suspicious bag. The bag contained drugs, a precision scale, and an improvised explosive device consisting of a battery, a detonator, a remote control, and an explosive substance. The blast injured four people: two police officers and two civilians. One officer sustained serious injuries, including burns, facial and eye trauma, and a finger amputation, and was taken to the 401 Military Hospital, while the others were treated at Evangelismos Hospital. Authorities are investigating whether the device was a booby trap or an abandoned item related to drug trafficking. The Organized Crime Unit and the Explosives Disposal Service are leading the investigation, which includes reviewing security camera footage to identify the person who left the bag. The Ministry of Citizen Protection stated the incident is being treated as a matter of “common criminal law rather than terrorism.” On October 22, 2026, a natural gas leak led to the precautionary evacuation of several schools in the same area. The leak was caused when a crew repairing underground wiring accidentally damaged a gas pipe at the intersection of Distomou pedestrian walkway and Tripoleos Street. Officials noted the pipe lacked proper identification markings.
